Martha Glass wrote
this travel diary during her crossing from Bremerhaven to
New York in
February 1947. Beginning with the train ride
from Bremen-Gröpelingen to the ship in Bremerhaven and ending
with her arrival in New
York harbor on March 13, 1947.
With this trip, Martha
Glass left Germany and began a new phase of her life in the Washington Heights
neighborhood of New
York, where she lived until her death in 1959. The thin travel diary was kept in the family and handed over
by Barbara
Müller-Wesemann to the IGdJ, where two further
first-person documents of Martha
Glass are kept: the Theresienstadt
diaries and the travel report of 1953.
