Sylvia Necker, Dr. phil., works as a historian, curator and sound artist in Nottingham and Frankfurt am Main. She studied history, art history, politics and sociology at the University of Hamburg, where she received her doctorate in architectural and contemporary history in 2010. Subsequently, she worked as a research assistant in teaching and research at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and at the Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research (IRS) in Erkner near Berlin. As curator, she realized two exhibitions on NS housing construction in Linz for the NORDICO Stadtmuseum Linz and the afo Architekturforum Oberösterreich in Linz from 2012 to 2013.
From 2014 to 2017 she was involved as curator and research assistant in the redesign of the permanent exhibition in the Dokumentation Obersalzberg (supervised by the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin). In January 2018 she moved to the University of Nottingham for a three-year research project on German-Jewish everyday and private photography as part of the joint project "Photography as Political Practice in National Socialism".
Her research focuses on architectural and contemporary history, the history of National Socialism, urban research, art and cultural history, and Jewish history. Sylvia Necker also works as a sound artist. She creates soundscapes, audio plays and compositions for museum and theater spaces.
