The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded as the Palestine Symphony Orchestra by violinist Bronisław Huberman in 1936. Its first principal conductor was William Steinberg. After the declaration of independence of the State of Israel in 1948, the orchestra changed its name to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
