The archive of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research holds the estate of Arie Goral-Sternheim. Arie Goral was born in Hamburg in 1909. In 1933, he fled from Hamburg to France, from where he immigrated to Palestine in 1934. In 1953, he returned – at first temporarily as an exhibition – to his former hometown of Hamburg. The correspondence between Arie Goral and Erich Lüth, head of the Hamburg State Press Office, are published in excerpts in this dossier. It provides insights into the confrontation with the past, questions of belonging, and the contemporary framework for a rapprochement to Germany.
