PREFACE

It has been almost twenty years that I became aware of Manuel Teixeira, banker to Christina, abdicated queen of Sweden, while doing research for my Ph.D. thesis on the relations between Holstein-Gottorf and Sweden. The exotic nature of the man and his global con-nections tempted me to study him more closely. From the study of this single case grew a whole web of questions which made it neces-sary to extend my research beyond Hamburg and lower Germany to the North, western Europe, and especially Spain and Portugal. Thus the topicbecame part of a larger research question which has yet to beanswered: to reveal the interplay that existed between northern Europe and the Iberian and Mediterranean regions and to investigate the economicand political conflicts which emerged from it and played a major part in the course of occidental history.

I am unable to list the names of all those here who offered their help and advice with this work. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to them. I feel particularly indebted to professors Eugen Franz (†), Adalbert Hämel (†), and Wilhelm Ensslin, who made it pos-sible for me to habilitate at the University of Würzburg with this work and who supported me with valuable scholarly advice and manifold assistance.
