It is quite curious what the late Dr. Schuppius reports in his treatise “The Inform[ed] Student” [p.n. pagina numerapage number 218] about the previous rich Jew (presumably this Man TexeraTeixeirafather): I came, he says, with a great man toHamburg and went for a walk after our meal to see thetown. I had visited the city previously and was amazed to seehow much it had grown in a short time. After some time, I cameto the Neustadt and wanted to visit a dear friend. Justas I arrived at his house, a man rode past in a splendid car-riage lined with velvet. A servant in livery ran alongside the car-riage, and when the driver stopped, this servant —whom I later heard was a Christian—obsequiously opened the door of the car-riage and lifted out an old man wearing a long sil-ken robe. I thought it must be either a bishop oran elderly prince or count. I removed my hat [and bowed] as deeplyas though he were the Elector of Saxony, and I asked a woman,“Who is this man?” The honest, pious woman answered witha smile: “He is a Jew, the one called the richJew.” I could hardly grasp it and thought:“Oh you rich Jew, how many Christians did you and your ancestorsdefraud to scratch together so much money thatyou can afford to spend more freely than someimperial counts in Germany? Your ancestors certainlydid not trade currency with Venice, Amsterdam, or Hamburgwhen Titus, Vespasian’s son, laid waste toJerusalem.”
