                <p>These five drawings published in different issues of the <foreign xml:lang="de">Gemeindeblatt</foreign> [Congregation Newsletter] and the
                            <foreign xml:lang="de"><orgName ref="nognd">Jüdisches
                                Gemeindeblatt</orgName> für das Gebiet der Hansestadt <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName></foreign> [Jewish Congregation Newsletter for the
                        Area of the Hanse City of <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName>] solicited
                        donations for the <orgName ref="nognd">Jewish Winter Relief</orgName> in the
                        winter of <date when="1937">1937</date>/<date when="1938">38</date>. The
                        signature appearing at the edge reads “Growald,” which indicates that the
                        drawings were the work of <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7003712">Berlin</placeName>
                        <roleName>commercial artist</roleName>
                        <persName ref="nognd">Hans Rudolf Growald</persName>.</p>
                    <p>The five titles spelled in capital letters are as follows: “Every head
                        remembers the Soup Kitchen Collection” [<foreign xml:lang="de">Jeder Kopf
                            denkt an den Eintopf</foreign>]—the image shows five laughing heads
                        hovering over a laughing stew pot; “A simple example: Sunday roast minus
                        stew equals a donation to the <orgName ref="nognd">Winter Relief</orgName>”
                            [<foreign xml:lang="de">Ein einfaches Exempel: Sonntagsbraten minus
                            Eintopfgericht gleich Winterhilfsspende</foreign>]—this math problem
                        shows a pot as teacher holding a pointer while standing in front of a
                        blackboard; “Help fill empty stoves and pots” <foreign xml:lang="de">[Helft
                            leere Öfen und Töpfe füllen</foreign>]—which shows an empty stove and an
                        empty stew pot crying bitterly; and in the image titled “Soup Kitchen
                        Collection” [<foreign xml:lang="de">Eintopfsammlung</foreign>] a laughing
                        figure 1 stirs a steaming pot of stew, which is a kind of rebus puzzle for
                        the German term “<foreign xml:lang="de">Eintopf</foreign>.” By contrast, the
                        image showing the lettering “<orgName ref="nognd">Jewish Winter
                            Relief</orgName>
                        <date when="1937">1937</date>/<date when="1938">38</date>” [<foreign xml:lang="de">Jüdische Winterhilfe</foreign>
                        <date when="1937">1937</date>/<date when="1938">38</date>] has a more
                        serious character and, appealing to the viewer’s Jewish identity, shows a
                        lit <ref type="editorialNote" target="#menorah">menorah</ref> in the
                        background while the <orgName ref="nognd">Jewish Winter Relief</orgName>
                        logo, the letters J and W combined below a star of David, can be seen in the
                        foreground.</p>
