Your venerable, serene, and most gracious Royal Majesty, I, the undersigned Abra-ham de Lemos, a Portuguese Jew andbroker, residing in Hamburg, hereby trulystate that I sent myson, Benjamin de Lemos, 16 years of age,to the world-famous Halle Uni versity four years ago to study medicine; that through this four years of upkeepI have exhausted my finances, confi-dent that my precious son would bea joy and a support to his fatherand mother in their old age;that as recently as December of last yearI, at my son’s urging,made over to him the funds requisite to theDoctorate;that, arriving in Halle, my son roomed and boarded with Samuel Simon Charleville, a High German Jew and medical stu- dent;that from the beginning Charleville’ssisterChana Charleville, over 30 years old, caressed theyoung man until hefinally, without my knowledge or consent,either at the end of the last yearor the beginning of thenew year, let himself be marriedto the same, and, to allapparent indications, my son has not spent the precious moneyon his studies but ratheron this cunning wench.Whereby, Most Gracious Kingand Master: 1mo Firstly, demonstrably, my son was born in the year 1715 after our Jewish Easter; 2do Secondly , by Hamburg law, the age of majority is reached with the completionof the 22nd year; 3tio Thirdly, my son is subject to my paternalauthority and would not be liberated from it by the Docto-rate, even if he had spent thefunds made over to him for thispurpose. 4to Fourthly, he cannot support himself, let alone a family; 5to Fifthly, and finally, it is known that marriages between Portuguese and High German Jews are as extraordinary and objectionable as those between Christians and Jews. Therefore, Most Venerable Royal Ma-jesty, I arrive at my most humble andbeseeching supplication. I ask, that in light of allpraevia causa cognitionein knowledge of the aforementioned causes,that this marriage be declarednull and void and abrogated.
