                                Majesty</persName></persName></roleName>, I, the undersigned
                        <persName ref="nognd">Abra-<lb/>ham de Lemos</persName>, a Portuguese Jew
                    and<lb/>broker, residing in <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName>, hereby truly<lb/>state that I sent my<lb/>son,
                        <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/1016547374">Benjamin de
                    Lemos</persName>, 16 years of age,<lb/>to the world-famous <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/1048495779"><placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/1036898">Halle</placeName> Uni<lb/>
                        <pb facs="2" n="[3v]"/>versity</orgName> four years ago to<lb/> study
                    medicine; <lb/>that through this four years of upkeep<lb/>I have exhausted my
                    finances, confi-<lb/>dent that my precious son would be<lb/>a joy and a support
                    to his father<lb/>and mother in their old age;<lb/>that as recently as <date when="1734-12">December of last year</date><lb/>I, at my son’s
                    urging,<lb/>made over to him the funds requisite to the<lb/>Doctorate;<lb/>that,
                    arriving in <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/1036898">Halle</placeName>, my son<lb/> roomed and boarded with<lb/>
                    <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/141751290">Samuel Simon
                        Charleville</persName>, a<lb/>
                    <pb facs="3" n="4"/> High German Jew and medical stu-<lb/> dent;<lb/>that from
                    the beginning <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/141751290">Charleville’s</persName><lb/>sister<note type="editorial" place="foot"><persName ref="nognd">Chana Charleville</persName></note>, over 30
                    years old, caressed the<lb/>young man until he<lb/>finally, without my knowledge
                    or consent,<lb/>either at the end of the <date when="1734">last
                    year</date><lb/>or the beginning of the<lb/><date when="1735">new year</date>,
                    let himself be married<lb/>to the same, and, to all<lb/>apparent indications, my
                    son<lb/> has not spent the precious money<lb/>on his studies but rather<lb/>on
                    this cunning <lb/>

                        </choice></foreign><expan>Firstly</expan>, demonstrably, my son was
                    born<lb/> in the year <date when="1715">1715</date> after our <ref target="#Passover" type="editorialNote">Jewish Easter</ref>;<lb/>

                        </choice></foreign><expan>Secondly</expan> , by <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName> law, the
                    age<lb/> of majority is reached with the completion<lb/>of the 22nd year;<lb/>
                    <foreign xml:lang="la"><choice>
                            <abbr>3tio</abbr>
                        </choice></foreign><expan>Thirdly</expan>, my son is subject to my
                    paternal<lb/>authority and would not be liberated from it by the
                    Docto-<lb/>rate, even if he had spent the<lb/>funds made over to him for this<lb/>purpose.<lb/>

                        </choice></foreign><expan>Fourthly</expan>, he cannot support himself, let
                    alone a<lb/>

                        </choice></foreign><expan>Fifthly</expan>, and finally, it is known
                    that<lb/> marriages between Portuguese and High<lb/> German Jews are as
                    extraordinary and<lb/> objectionable as those between Christians<lb/> and
                    Jews.<lb/> Therefore, Most Venerable <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118535978"><roleName>Royal
                            Ma-<lb/>jesty</roleName></persName>, I arrive at my most humble
                    and<lb/>beseeching supplication. I ask, that in light of all<lb/><hi rendition="#right"><foreign xml:lang="la">praevia causa cognitione<note type="editorial" place="foot">in knowledge of the aforementioned
                                causes</note></foreign>,<lb/>that this marriage be declared<lb/>null
                        and void and abrogated.</hi></p>
