                <p>Giving guest lectures at their old place of work was a common step for those
                    persecuted by the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/1012979-0">National
                        Socialists</orgName> in their remigration process. The focus was on mutual
                    (re-)rapprochement and proof of academic competence. After <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118509284">Walter <choice>
                            <abbr>A.</abbr>
                            <expan>Arthur</expan>
                        </choice> Berendsohn</persName> had already given guest lectures in
                        <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName> in
                        <date when="1948">1948</date>, the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">faculty</orgName> did not want to
                    accept any further guest lectures from him. On the one hand, they would lack
                    scientific value, on the other hand, he was said to have made negative comments
                    about the political attitude of German universities. </p>

                    <hi rendition="#et">At its meeting on <date when="1950-05-17">May 17,
                            1950</date>, the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty
                            of Arts</orgName></hi><lb/> came to the decision to refrain<lb/> from
                    inviting <roleName>Professor</roleName>
                    <hi rendition="#g"><persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118509284">Berendsohn</persName></hi> again.<lb/>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rendition="#et">For this decision, the two following reasons were
                        essential:</hi><lb/>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rendition="#et">1. After listening to the judgment of competent
                            <roleName>faculty members</roleName>,</hi><lb/> who listened to the
                    lectures given here by <roleName>Professor</roleName>
                    <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118509284">Berendsohn</persName> in <date when="1948">1948</date><lb/> and who are familiar with his scholarly<lb/>
                    production, the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty</orgName>
                    has come to the conclusion that a renewed<lb/>
                    <hi rendition="#u">invitation to give guest lectures cannot be<lb/> considered
                        as particularly desirable</hi>.<lb/> This judgment of the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty</orgName> agrees with the
                    evaluation of<lb/>
                    <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118509284">Berendsohn</persName>’s work
                    provided by competent <roleName>colleagues</roleName> abroad.<lb/>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rendition="#et">2. Although the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty</orgName> is quite aware of
                        the fact</hi><lb/> that <roleName>Professor</roleName>
                    <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118509284">Berendsohn</persName> deserves
                    special treatment in this matter<lb/> as well because he represents a case of
                    restitution,<lb/> the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty</orgName>, to its great regret, <hi rendition="#u">does not see
                        itself<lb/> in a position to allow this fact to influence its
                    decision</hi>,<lb/> since it has evidence in its hands that
                        <roleName>Professor</roleName><lb/>
                    <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/118509284">Berendsohn</persName>, in a
                    private letter dating from <date when="1949-04">April 1949</date>, had suspected
                    the political<lb/> attitude of the German universities and thus the <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName><lb/>
                    <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty</orgName> of political
                    bias against his person.<lb/>
                </p>
                <p>
                    <hi rendition="#et">The <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5028264-5">Faculty</orgName>’s negative decision was passed unanimously.</hi><lb/>
