<p>It is very bitter for me to receive up to ten disappointed letters a
day,<lb/>letters like the one you sent me on <date when="1953-02-24">February
24</date>. You<lb/>are quite right to say that it involves a ridiculously
small sum.<lb/>Unfortunately, I do not have this amount and unfortunately,
                        our<lb/><orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/2011925-2">Hamburg
Society</orgName> is currently in debt, despite our tireless<lb/>work. I
had therefore passed on your proposal<lb/>to the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/2028264-3">Hamburg school
authorities</orgName>, whose <roleName>head</roleName> told me a few days ago
                    <lb/>that his <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/2028264-3">authority</orgName> would
                    probably cover<lb/>the exhibition.<lb/></p>

<p>Thus, I was quite hopeful that a positive decision would be made very
soon.<lb/>Perhaps positive notice is already<lb/>on its way to you, which I
                    cannot tell at this<lb/>moment, as I must leave <placeName ref="geo:53.55038339999999,9.992368599999963"><orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/16284187-5">city hall</orgName></placeName> in
                    a few minutes<lb/>for an important event.</p>

<p>Of course, it is doubly painful for me to read letters like yours,<lb/>but my
activity has meant that every day,<lb/>three to five <ref target="#Restitution" type="editorialNote">restitution cases</ref> are submitted to me, cases with
                    which<lb/>all the <roleName>specialist lawyers</roleName> are having a tough
time. Every day,<lb/>I receive three to five manuscripts of radio plays, stage
plays, novels<lb/>poetry, and factual reports. I have just suceeded in arranging
a German-Jewish<lb/>exhibition of paintings. In addition, I have also remedied
the currency problems <lb/>concerning the re-export of the successful ceramics
exhibition of an emigrated<lb/>German Jewish woman. In addition, together with
my friends, I am campaigning<lb/>toward changing the attitudes of academic
youths<lb/>and toward the rapid ratification of the German-Israeli
                    agreement.</p>

<p>Everything is supposed to happen alongside my regular duties and it often takes
place<lb/>during an 18 to 20-hour workday. And I know that we<lb/>are obliged to
do this work. However, not everything suceeds and<lb/>not everything can
succeed. That is why I must put up with bitter letters<lb/>like yours, even
though they are liable to sap the rest of my strength.<lb/>For no one realizes
that sometimes it is<lb/>not even possible to conjure up an exhibition
