Sunday, July 5 Always brightweather. The Atlantic Ocean calm like the Alster. Breakfast 9.15 at 9:15 a.m.wit all the trimmings. Fruit, ceraeals, ham and eggs, jams etc., fabulous coffee At 130 lunch with variety of delicacies In between, at 11 boullion on deck. Five o’clock tea with cake + music At 7 30p.m., dinner with everything the heart desires. Tonight At 9 p.m. movies. „Gentlemen prefers Blondes“ Every night as a nightcap a glass of beer in the bar. The clientele goodbut simple,we have nodesire at all to make [acquaintances]and enjoien air & sun. The cabin for 4 persons is very small but toilet, washstand & showeradjacent, very pleasant.

July 6, 1953. During the night, Inge & I had severe diarrhoea, whether due to seasickness or from eating a spoiled dish? We were so miserable that we had breakfast in bed, only QuakerQuaker probably refers to “Quaker oats”. + tea and toast I stayed in bed until lunch After that, in bed again until dinner with a hot-water bag. Then we ate very diet[ery] food &afterward bingo was on with potential winnings of 50 DM Deutsche Mark [German marks]but of course,we were not in on that.The weatherhas changed a lot.Much colder& choppyseas. Every eveningthe clock is set forward by an hour.

July 7, 53 Not a ray of sun& very agitatedsea, so that onecan only “always move along the wall,”and slowlyat that.After breakfast, as a precautionI lay down on the bed, as did Inge later on as well. We did not go to lunch & got up only for the 5 o´clock tea. Then we continued to rest for 2 hrs. hours , sheltered in our chairs.Now at 9 15, we sitin the cinema where they show a western film. Despite bad weather & not being in good shape, time flies.

July 8, 53 Wednesday We had a stormy night so that we were thrown back & forth in bed. I stayed in bed in the morning. In the hallways & rooms, ropes were tied along the walls that one had to grab to hold steady. In the afternoon, from 4 – 6, we could lay in the deck chair on deck after all. In the evening, again gala dinner with hats & surprises, since we'll land in Ireland tomorrow, with 288 passengers disembarking, mostly nuns & padres. The part is called Cobh

H Thursday July 9. Blue sky & bright sunshine. Inge got up at 6 o'clock to experience the landing in Ireland. The harbor is so small, that the sizable America cannot dock. The passengers were taken ashore on tenders You could see green beaches & land, small churches & houses. Today [the weather] is unforgettably beautiful. Even for meals, one does not want to go indoors. Tomorrow morning, we will put in at L’Havre where Senta Rosenbaum-Bachner whom I have seen here again after countless years, will be going ashore with her husband. Tonight for the last time, bingo & bar.

Friday July 10 Overnight, we docked at L’Havre , where this morning we observed the interesting harbor life + the passengers going ashore. Anchored in front of us was the “Isle de France”Name of a ship For days now, bright sunshine & even in the so-called, dreaded Channel, not a trace of seasickness. At 11 a.m., we departed from L’Havre + landed at 5 o'clock in Southhampton Southampton where Inge went ashore & we bid each other a heavy-hearted farewell. Here we lie in the harbor for 5 hours + at night, we sail onward to Bremer- haven. Inge & I have had a wonderful, harmonious week at sea.

Saturday, July 11, 53. Yesterday evening at 8 o'clock, the Isle de FranceName of a ship arrived in Southhampton Southampton & lies directly next to us in the harbor At 10 o'clock, we departed. Today is the brightest day of the trip. The sea is like the Inner Alster. At 10 o'clock, customs & foreign exchange declaration completed without any difficulties. Since then, I lie, without shoes & stockings on deck + think wistfully of tomorrow's farewell. It has been the most beautiful trip of my life.

Sunday, July 12 At 7 o'clock, Breakfast is served & at 7 ½ we dock at Bremerhaven where I, God willing, will reunite with my beloved E’lein Edith . I must yet [report] about yesterday eveningSentence incomplete, probably: report.. A sunset at 9 o'clock at Helgoland as I have never seen. At 10 ½, we put into Bremer- hafen which, radiantly illuminated, made an imposing impression.

Sunday, July 12 At 7 ½ on the dot, we went ashore + already E’lein Edith & I were in each other's arms.What is meant is probably “lagen uns in den Armen,” i.e., “embraced each other.” Such vacation bustle prevails everywhere in this place that Edith did not even get her reserved room in in the hotel & instead stayed with a Priest. We departed immediately, changed trains in Bremen, and were in the Reichshof Hotel at 12 o'clock. Two solid, quiet rooms for 12 Mk. Mark plus 15 percent. We ate at the hotel & rested well. Then we went to Planten & Bloomen Blomen . The beauty of the flowers is hard to describe as is the architectural setup with bridges, waterworks & restaurants. It was such a wonderful summer evening that we lounged outdoors until 10 o'clock at night & fabulous brown bread with cured ham.

Monday, July 13 We slept in, had breakfast in a snack bar, 2 minutes from our accommodation, good quality & half as expensive as in the hotel. Then we went to the bank. Tomorrow morning, I can get my money for the 10 days ahead. The whole day saw heavy thunderstorms so that we managed to stroll only in the lower city. These window displays, this taste, this elegance, this car traffic. This city can compete with New York In front of the “Glass Haus”The site of the former fashion store owned by Hermann Glass“Glass Haus” is written on the street in mosaic, which cannot be removed & which moved me to tears. Then we ate at Michelsen's, excellent but very expensive & starting tomorrow, we will likely have to starve because the hotel bill will be 300 Mk. Mark and the return tickets to Gastein 390 Mk. Mark

Tuesday, July 14 Today, first thing to the bank, where the very nice clerk, without being asked, paid out to me funds for 20 days that we can definitely use. After a stroll through the city with its elegant displays & hug traffic, we ate at Michelsen's, which was excellent but very expensive. Beforehand, we called on jeweller Reinecke in the Glass Haus who recognized me immediately & greeted me with sincere joy & told me that Mrs. Bischoff had sold the building to the health insurance company that has occupied the premises for 25 years. In general, all the old tenants are still there, even the janitor. We mostly have meals next door at the Europäische Hof, very tasty & by far not as expensive, as in the restaurants. It has been raining almost without interruption and it is freezing cold so that I am suffering from nasty rheumatism

Wednesday, July 15. Rain & freezing cold so that I stayed in the Hôtel in the morning. Edith went to the Congregation because of the memorial stone for father & to see Paula whom we can't visit before Friday. In the afternoon, Ellen Schunge & Anita Andrieolu visited us at the hotel for a pleasant an cozy tea in the lobby & we had much to talk about. In the evening, television at the hotel but TV is still very much in its infancy & was dreadful.

Thursday, July 16 The weather seems to be clearing up Today we have had breakfast in the hotel. To the insane prices, I have gradually gotten used to. Then I went into the city on my own. Edith had a business meeting to attend. My optician at Grosse Bleichen no longer exists. Everything there is bombed out. So then, I went to Campbell's, after all, where I had my eyes thoroughly examined. Including frames, each pair of glasses cost 58 Mk. marks & I have 2 so I paid 116 Mk. marks . There is no such elegant optician's store in all of New York I said hello to Mr. Flaschner who had just arrived from N.Y. New York Because of the cold, in the very first store, I bought myself a sweater & a skirt, which were 11 Mk. marks overall. My little alarm clock cost 50 Mk. marks . The other daily expenses I can't write down. Tonight we were in a cabaret put put on by Düsseldorfer artists called the “Commödchen“ in the former [Jewish] community center at Hartungstrasse. It was a very witty & amusing.

Friday July 17 Rain, rain It is exasperating. All of the planned excursions, to Travemünde, for which end the bus has been parked in front of the hotel, and to the Elbe, you cannot set out to undertake anything. At 10 o'clock in the morning, Mr. Dohren came to the hotel to greet me. In the afternoon, we went to see Paula & we had to call on the ground-floor tenants Mr. Melamerson & housekeeper to have coffee. Paula gave me a large bouquet of red roses, then we drove to Ohlsdorf & ordered a memorial stone for fatherMartha Glass’s late husband, which, including inscription & setting costs 242 Mk. Mark . Saturday, July 18, 1953 Sleeping car tickets 48 Mk. Mark Mr. Dohren paid me a second visit & was happy to have a good breakfast with us. The whole morning, I packed for the trip. Rosi Mendel & Daisy Eichholz called to say hello. In the afternoon, we were at Dr. Hannes' for coffee. Such a mutual joy as one can hardly imagine I can barely get over the silence in the suburban streets, the heavenly peace & the good air!!

Sunday, July 19 Beautiful but cold weather. At 11 o'clock Daisy came to the hotel. We decided to take the suburban train to the Elbe all the way to the Hochkamp & walked old familiar paths, past the beautiful villas featuring the most splendid gardens with well-kept lawns & old trees. At Jacob's in Nienstedten we had a first-rate lunch, Edith's treat. Flottbek was venue to the Derby & Spring Tournament, so that we barely managed to get a table. At 6 p.m., we were back. Just now, we settled the hotel bill that is much more moderate than I expected At 1015 84 Mk. Mark per head. At 1015 we set out for Gastein in one go. For the first time in my life, I am riding in a “sleeping car.” This afternoon, while we were eating, there was another severe thunderstorm! Our sealed luggage is already on its way & cost 20 Mk. Mark in freight charges Farewell my dear Hamburg?!

Gastein Monday, July 20, 53 At 10 15, we departed Hamburg in the sleeping car, for the first time in my long life in a sleeping car. It was simply horrible + so drafty that I am now completely beset with rheumatism. In Augsburg, we went into the front car since the sleeping cars were uncoupled in Munich Then off we went to hereGastein in one go, arriving shortly after 3 o'clock. Glorious blue sky but freezing cold. The ride from H. Hamburg to here takes 17 hours. In our Coupée, there was a woman who also went to G. Gastein + a young Professor from Kiel with his assistant who had been called to Istanbul . The train departed from Altona-Belgrad. House Goldeck is a big beautiful house, old, but with every comfort. About 40 guests, we eat in 2 shifts. Beds & coffee are great, for me the most important things. The countryside & air are indescribable. The sky is blue without a cloud, following an apparent period of rain & snow just the days before our arrival.

Gastein Tuesday, July 21, 53 Freezing cold, but blue sky & sunshine Breakfast in the room which for persons taking baths is not possible In any other way. Edith went to the doctor's. Tomorrow morning at 6, she will have her first bathspa therapy. The number of benches & paths round here one can hardly imagine. On our house, deck chairs are set up in the rooftop garden, where we have our afternoon nap. In the afternoon, we went to the city, with the hotel palaces & huge automobile & bus traffic. And then, there is a waterfall that gushes with enormous roar from the mountains right through the middle of the town. I have also bought a walking stick for 30 schillings.

Tuesday Wednesday J. July 22, 53 Edith first bath. She is to take five baths one after the other. Since there are no bathtubs in the house, I also took a thermal bath without medical prescription, cleared out & was out of there after 5 min minutes . In this way, I will also probably get 8 to 10 baths. After breakfast, we went for a lovely walk in the forest. Most beautiful paths with an infinite number of benches. People all walk with a stick, many very crippled. After lunch, again 2 hours on the deck chair on the rooftop garden. Then we went to the “schwarzen Lisl”Probably referring to Schwarze Lisl café. an Alpine snack bar & had a bowl of sour milk. In the evening, I plunked myself down on the bed like a dead woman at 9 ½ & slept until 6 o'clock in one go.

Thursday, July 23 Weather divine Edith's second bath. Went to the post office & to the spa concert. The waterfall is in the middle of town, where the entire range of elegant international life takes place & the most fabulous displays are located. I was very rash & bought myself a black calf- leather handbag. Mine is too small & no longer in good shape. And the sculpture at a colossal price of 700 schillings. After lunch, as always we lounged on the rooftop for three hours. After that, we took a heavenly three-hour forest walk to another waterfall. Such forests, such well-kept comfortable paths I have not seen anywhere yet.

Friday, July 24, 53 Edith's third bath. During the night, it rained & now the mists are rising. It was foggy the whole day but without rain, so that we were able to walk after all. In the afternoon, I went on strike & just went for a “sitting walk”M.G.’s formulation for an outing using a ride in the car or bus or just situng on a bench.

Saturday, July 25 Edith's fourth, my second bath. Afterwards, dead tired as always. Also just went for a “sitting walk”M.G.’s formulation for an outing using a ride in the car or bus or just situng on a bench. & bought myself a pair of black walking shoes. Price was 160 schillings (7 dollars). The whole afternoon, we lay on the roof, in the evening we got the first check, for ancillary charges, eggs, wine, coffee, ectr et cetera . 77 Shilg Schilling plus 10 S. Schilling as a tip.

Sunday, July 26 53 Glorious weather as usual. Edith's fifth bath This morning, we attend the spa concert, where there were no seats are vacant any more, and in the afternoon, we went by bus to Grüner Baum an Alpine snack bar with a lovely view. On the way back, we followed a delightful footpath taking about ¾ hours. I have to limit my walking because my weak feet fail me & hurt very much.

Monday, July 27, 53 Today Edith has no bath. I am sitting around since I have spent the last days walking a bit too much. Since noon for the first time, rain with thunder & lightning, which hopefully won't turn into days of heavy constant fine drizzlerain. We used the afternoon to correspond.

Tuesday, July 28 Now it has arrived, the famous rain Edith's 6 th bath. Then she went to see the doctor, who was not happy with her heart but otherwise quite satisfied. I went to the post office, where I bought 50 Sh. schillings worth of airmail stamps. In the afternoon, we took an extensive nap & then went to the reading room in the spa house Kurhaus that accommodates enormous amounts of reading materials. In the evening, we got the first weekly bill that included baths, drinks & spa tax, 2239 Sh. Schilling for both. Very moderate & reasonable.

Wednesday, July 29 Edith's 7th bath, my 3 3rd Very nice weather so we went for a walk. In the afternoon, we had coffee and cake on the patio of the Gasteiner Hof, excellent but for 25 Sh. Schilling Then I, frivolous fool, bought 2 miniature Schnapps bottles, an eggnog with cognac & a raspberry brandy, priced at 35 Sh. Schilling . In the evening, we attended a very nice symphony concert. When we came out, it was pouring. Here there are only private cars. Nevertheless, a cab showed up. Which we took! The driver gave use a 5-minute ride in our direction. However, since we are accommodated on the top of the mountain, we climbed one set of stairs after the other until we happily arrived at our place. The cab was 20 Sh Schilling . Such an expensive day must nothappen often.

Thursday, July 30 Edith's eighth bath The whole day, torrential rain.lb/> In the morning, we went to the reading room. In the afternoon we could not go outdoors & took care of correspondence.

Friday July 31. Edith's ninth bath Weather nice again but wintry cold- At 11 o'clock, a Mrs. Hasse from Berlin called on us, a friend of Mrs. Badrian's. With her, we went for a walk until noon. In the afternoon, we hiked to “Grüner Baum“, the nicest Alpine snack bar in the vicinity. One hour to walk up & ½ an hour back. Saturday, Aug August 1, 53 Edith's tenth bath, my fourth. Nice dry weather. In the morning & afternoon, we went only for short walks.

Sunday, August 2 In the morning, as always, a nice walk under slightly cloudy skies. Edith had no baths. Afternoon with Mrs. Hasse at the Café Schuh (owned by Paula Wessely), pouring rain.

Monday, August 3 Edith's eleventh bath Sky all gray and drab. During the day, it rained so hard, that you do not wish to step outdoors. 7 ° RéaumurOutdated temperature scale; 7 degrees Réaumur correspond to about 9 degrees Celsius. & Fresh snow all the way down to the valley..

Tuesday, Aug. August 4, 53 Edith's twelfth bath Rain and more rain. In the afternoon, it cleared up so that we could still take a nice walk. Wednesday, Aug. August 5, 53 Edith's thirteenth bath, my fifth. Blue sky & sunshine In the afternoon, we took a ride to Böckstein for coffee Everywhere just the best coffee with whipped cream & splendid cakes. Located on a hill and visible from afar is a very beautiful pilgrimage church.

Thursday Aug. August 6. Edith's fourteenth bath Rain, rain, and more rain. We were not outdoors during the entire day. In the afternoon, I had a pleasant and cheerful game of bridge with an old couple, the Dr Semper from Göttingen & a Dr Cade from Lausanne.

Friday Aug. August 7, 53 Edith's fifteenth bath. Beautiful, cold weather. In the morning, we went to the town & to the Bank. In the afternoon, E’lein Edith went out on her own. I slept in & did not feel so well & stayed home.

Saturday Aug. August 8 We both have no bathsscheduled. Wonderful weather, blue skies without a cloud & bright sunschine. At 11, we take the bus down to Hofgastein, 20 min minutes downhill on a beautiful forest road. Very nice spa facilities, also a wonderful, beautiful spa building, and the Ache River, along whose banks one can take extended walks for hours. We had lunch at the Salzburger Hof and had coffee on the patio of spa house & were home again by bus at 4 ½ o'clock. Tickets to & from, 4.40 per person.

Sunday, 9.8.53. On the occasion of our golden wedding anniversary, Edith put in my room an amazingly pretty Alpine bouquet, Alpine roses, gentian & edelweiss. Edith's sixteenth, my sixth bath. Heavenly weather I have spent the day very quietly. We drank coffee on our deck & then took a wonderful walk in the forest. In the morning, Inge & Edgar called from Hamburg on the occasion of the golden wedding anniversary which delighted me to no end.

Monday, Aug. August 10, 53 Edith's seventeenth bath. Bright weather In the morning, bought a skirt for Edith (for 350 Sh. Schilling ) In the afternoon, Edith until now, 4 o'clock on the lawn for sunbathing. Then we went to the Alpine snack bar called Gamskar, a solid hour's hike on a lovely forest path via the middle waterfall.
