            <p>
                For your instruction, pious and God-fearing<lb/>
                brothers, who are whole-heartedly<lb/>
                dedicated to our sacred laws and customs,<lb/>
                and who trustingly rely on the leadership of<lb/>
                your Teachers of Religion; for your instruction,<lb/>
                we have, assembled this collection of letters and<lb/>
                maxims from our most learned <roleName>rabbis</roleName>.<lb/>
                May the words of these distinguished<lb/>
                men protect you from the seductive poison<lb/>
                of the craving after innovation. May they give you<lb/>
                the strength to maintain your unalterable faith in<lb/>
                our holy <ref target="#Torah" type="editorialNote"><foreign xml:lang="he">Torah</foreign></ref> and the words of our wise men,<lb/>
                so that you never deviate from the right<lb/>
                path. Unfortunately, for several years<lb/>
                now, irreligiosity and freethinking have increased <lb/>
                among us. Indifference toward the wise<lb/>
                teachings of our great forebears, the men<lb/>
                of the <ref target="#Mishnah" type="editorialNote"><foreign xml:lang="he">Mishna</foreign></ref> and <ref target="#Gemara" type="editorialNote"><foreign xml:lang="he">Gemara</foreign></ref>, and neglect<lb/>of their wise prescriptions and restraints<lb/>
                <pb facs="2" n="2"/>that so powerfully supported our religion, paved<lb/>the way for
                total disrespect for all our<lb/>religious laws. The holiest commandments of<lb/>our
                laws, both written and handed down, were<lb/>scorned and trampled underfoot; and
                they did<lb/>not shy away from undertaking the most reprehensible<lb/>actions
                against our sacred teachings. </p>
            <lb/>
            <p> However, the contraveners of the law still<lb/>were confined to the limits of the
                individual, they<lb/>did not dare to openly step forward in order to carry<lb/>out
                modifications of our laws and customs<lb/>yet. And the God-fearing had only
                to<lb/>regret the error of individual brothers<lb/>and pray to God for their return
                to<lb/>
                piety. But now our<lb/>
                sacred religion faces a bleak future;<lb/>
                no longer do only individual brothers allow themselves<lb/>
                to sin by transgressing the law;<lb/>
                rather, social organizations have formed<lb/>
                in order to modify our religious laws<lb/>
                and customs, while, unbidden,<lb/>
                scribblers busy themselves with giving the<lb/>
                reforms that stand in opposition to the spirit<lb/>
                of our law the appearance of religiosity and<lb/>

                Thereby, precious brothers, we lay before you the<lb/>
                assessment of these great and distinguished men.<lb/>
                Men, from whose universally acknowledged and<lb/>
                genuine religiosity, we are entitled to expect a<lb/>
                conscientious examination of these matters. Men,<lb/>
                whose fundamental erudition will leave no doubt<lb/>

            <lb/>
            <p>
                In all the expert opinions it will be demonstrated<lb/>
                by incontrovertible
                principles that the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4619943-3">New

                you back with open arms into the ancient<lb/>

                may forgive your false step whereby you have<lb/>deeply

            </p>
            <lb/>
            <p>
                O, Heavenly Father of All! show mercy to<lb/>
