            <p>
                The <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/16325953-7">local chapter</orgName> has seen
                a positive development<lb/>
                in the <date when="1905">past year</date> thanks to<lb/>
                the lively activity of its members.
            </p><lb/>
            <p>
                The number of our members has increased from 248 to 277, the<lb/>
                number of shekel payers from 279 to 311. The increase<lb/>
                in membership would be greater if there<lb/>
                were not such a high turnover of younger merchants in<lb/>
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName>. We should
                also point out that immediately<lb/>
                after the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/82485-9">VII Congress</orgName> 15
                members resigned<lb/>
                and that the executive board refrained from holding<lb/>
                public propaganda meetings in view of the situation of<lb/>
                <ref target="#Zionism" type="editorialNote">Zionism</ref> and the sad events in
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7002435">Russia</placeName><lb/>
                since the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/82485-9">Congress</orgName>.
            </p><lb/>

                The activity of the board of directors initially consisted in the<lb/>

                During the year under review, the female<lb/>
                members of the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/16325953-7">local
                chapter</orgName> also joined<lb/>
                together to form a <hi rendition="#g">women's association</hi>,<lb/>
                which has 75 members and met once or twice a month.<lb/>
                (<roleName>Chairwoman</roleName>: Mrs. <persName ref="nognd"><hi rendition="#g">H.
                Huldschiner</hi></persName>.) The women's<lb/>
                group earned special merit by organizing a successful<lb/>
                <ref target="#Chanukka" type="editorialNote">Maccabees celebration</ref> attended by
                360 children, at which<lb/>
                <persName ref="nognd">Miss <hi rendition="#g">Veilchenfeld</hi></persName> gave the
                ceremonial speech. At last,<lb/>
                at the instigation of local Zionists, a
                <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5018170-1"><hi rendition="#g">Jewish people's<lb/>
                association</hi></orgName> came into being in <date when="1905-12">December</date>,
                which, on a national<lb/>
                basis, organizes foreigners without regard<lb/>
                to political orientation. (<roleName>Chairman</roleName>: initially<lb/>
                <persName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/126636842">Dr. Pinkus</persName>, now
                <persName ref="nognd">Dr. Victor</persName>). The
                <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5018170-1">Jewish people's<lb/>
                association</orgName> holds its weekly meetings on<lb/>
                Saturday evening in <placeName ref="nognd"><foreign xml:lang="de">Bährs
                Restaurant</foreign></placeName>,
                <placeName ref="geo:53.5503,9.982499999999959"><foreign xml:lang="de">Alter<lb/>
                Steinweg</foreign></placeName>. – We refrained from holding entertainments<lb/>
                due to the national disaster in
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7002435">Russia</placeName><note type="editorial" place="foot">Pogroms
                around <date when="1906">1906</date> in
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7007545">Bialystok</placeName> and
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7007793">Siedlce</placeName></note>.
                Meanwhile numerous Zionists meet<lb/>
                every Saturday evening at <placeName ref="nognd"><foreign xml:lang="de">Café
                Ott</foreign></placeName> to socialize.
            </p><lb/>
            <p>
                20 meetings of the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/16325953-7">local
                chapter’s</orgName> executive committee took place.<lb/>
                By decision of a general meeting, the board of directors<lb/>
                approached the <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5277394-2">Henry Jones
                Lodge</orgName>
                <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4247886-8"><abbr><foreign xml:lang="de">U. O. B.
                B.</foreign></abbr></orgName> with the request<lb/>
                to rebuild the <placeName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5236109-3">Jewish reading
                room</placeName> in cooperation<lb/>
                with other associations. The committee formed<lb/>
                by representatives of the associations involved (Mr.
                <persName ref="nognd">Estermann</persName><lb/>
                was the Zionist representative) held two meetings, but these<lb/>
                did not produce any practical results, so that unfortunately the untenable<lb/>
                condition of a <placeName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/5236109-3">reading
                hall</placeName> in
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName> that is
                completely<lb/>
                inadequate and only exists in name, continues. The<lb/>
                <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/16325953-7">local chapter</orgName> plans to
                establish a reading hall<lb/>
                in the center of the
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">city</placeName> with its own
                means,<lb/>
                albeit initially only on a modest scale.

                newspaper advertisements. As a result of the more active<lb/>
                distribution of the telegrams, a turnover of 4500
                <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/1013336-7">National Fund</orgName><lb/>
                stamps was achieved in
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName> in the
                <date when="1905">past year</date>.<lb/>
                We are convinced that this institution can be further developed<lb/>
                and are in the process of setting up a telegram<lb/>
                propaganda center for
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7000084">Germany</placeName> in
                <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName> at the<lb/>
                instigation of the Central Bureau. The local collection<lb/>

                Club headquarters has been located in
