                still represents the main port of departure for Russian<lb/> and thus also for <ref target="http://www.dasjuedischehamburg.de/inhalt/auswanderung">Jewish

                not mandated to stay in <lb/> the <placeName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/4649096-6">halls</placeName><note type="editorial" place="foot">Accommodation built at the
                    Hamburg port in 1900 in order to house the numerous emigrants.</note>
                (Austrians, Romanians). Their number may be<lb/> presumed to be about 6,000, so that
                a total of 35,007 Jewish<lb/> emigrants made their journey from <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName>.
                Unfortunately,<lb/> exact statistical information as exists for <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005286">Bremen</placeName> was not available,
                and<lb/> thus we had to depend on estimates in our calculations regarding which
                countries the<lb/> Jewish emigrants went to. </p>

            <p> We had calculated the number of Jewish emigrants at about 35,000,<lb/> that is 22½ %
                of total emigration. We may assume<lb/> that the share of Jewish emigrants among
                those migrating to the<lb/> above-mentioned countries is about the same.</p>
            <lb/>
            <p> In order to provide the numerous Jewish emigrants in <placeName ref="http://vocab.getty.edu/tgn/7005289">Hamburg</placeName> with
                sufficient<lb/> and effective care, we had established a local chapter<lb/> of our
                    <orgName ref="http://d-nb.info/gnd/3021059-8">Central Bureau for Jewish
                    Emigration</orgName> there in the<lb/>
                <date when="1906">previous year</date>. Under the thoughtful<lb/> and experienced
                leadership of our executive committee member,<lb/> Mr. <persName ref="nognd">Paul
                    Laskar</persName>, to whom we would like to express our heartfelt thanks,<lb/>
